Book Beginnings on Friday

Book Beginnings on Friday is a meme hosted by Becky at Page Turners. Anyone can participate; just share the opening sentence of your current read, making sure that you include the title and author so others know what you're reading. If you like, share with everyone why you do, or do not, like the sentence. (Thanks to Rose City Reader for inspiring this meme)

We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver

This book is extremely depressing. I have to admit that up front. But it is certainly food for thought.
"I'm unsure why one trifling incident this afternoon has moved me to write to you."
I enjoy this beginning. It's is immediately clear that the book is going to be a conversation (if one sided) between two people through writing letters. They are obviously apart from each other, since she needs to be moved to write to him. And the sense of unease that permeates this book is there from the very beginning.

If you have been thinking about reading this books, I recommend that you pick it up.

  1. Hopping by! This looks like a really fun meme, I want to try it sometime. I've never heard of We Need to Talk About Kevin, but I'm intrigued by this 'trifling incident' that's mentioned.

  2. I am reluctant to read that book. I'm reading Somewhere off the Coast of Maine by Ann Hood.

  4. We Need to Talk About Kevin is one of my favourites. Stick with it, Shriver tackles this subject in a way no one has before and it's worth it. My first Book Beginnings on Friday post is now linked, thank you.

  5. Thanks for dropping by everyone. I understand your reluctance to read it pussreboots. I wouldn't want to read this book if I was considering having kids and not sure about it. I don't think I would even want to read it while I was pregant. But since I'm neither, I am enjoying it despite its depressing effect. I understand how it is some people's favourite.

  6. Guess this means that opening sentence means something bad just happened. I dislike depressing books.

Mine this week starts with letters.

  7. Hey Becky, I'm joining in finally!

My other half has driven off to Adelaide for a week (we're going to buy some land -acres with bush- on the Murray!!)so I'm faffing about online.

Anyway, I suppose I should finish up now and stick my nose back in my book.

    Have wonderful Friday night!

  11. Carin - I know, thanks for being there from the beginning?

Thanks to those that hopped by from the blogger hop.

The trifling incident was a small thing, nothing too bad. It just prompted her to write to her husband
