A Blast from the Past: The Hobbit by JRR Tolkein

A Blast From the Past is a meme for people to review a book that they read before they started blogging. It doesn't have to be a favourite, it might be that you didn't enjoy it. It is about sharing a book from your past with others.

The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien

I love love love anything Tolkien. I read The Hobbit as a child in primary school. I borrowed a beautiful copy from the school library that had lovely big illustrations. As an adult I made sure that I purchased the same copy that I read back then in primary school. I knew that I wanted to own it and that I wanted to own that copy with the beautiful illustrations.

I don't even really know what to say about this book. Its Tolkien. Does that say it all? I love the adventure. I love that although it is fantasy, it feels like history. I love how rich the characters are. I love how rich the countryside is. I love how rich the story is. I love everything about it.

I want to be able to say more, but I feel like this book is beyond words for me. I hope that if you haven't tried reading this book, you do now.

I get attached to certain editions too, like I would love to own the same edition/copy of The Once and Future King that I read for the first time because the illustrations were amazing, and the cover was so retro and beautiful.

Great post, I LOVED the Hobbit!

Im glad you loved it, it is pretty special.

You're right about becoming attached to certain additions, I am very prone to this.

Another Tolkien fan yay! I have about 3 foot of shelf space dedicated to Tolkien and it started with Lord of the Rings, which I began reading when I was about 9. I didn't find out about the hobbit till much later and now I have gone to the extent of tracking down old editions of the Silmarillion. I even collect role playing game books based on Middle Earth for the sumptuous visual aids that come with them

My LOT fandom began with The Hobbit and then moved on to the LOTR. I love to hear about someone else with a big Tolkein collection, although mine doesn't seem quite as big as yours. I have a Tolkein shelf on my bookcase. I have a beautiful illustrated version of the Hobbit, the 3 LOTR, the Silmariliion (which is so hard to read), a big illustrated discussion of the books by David Day, and then lots of non-fiction books, and some other by Tolekin I can't remember the titles of. Lots and Lots. I haven't seen any game books like the ones that you talk about.

I went to New Zealand a couple of years ago and went on a couple of the LOTR tours to see the scenes from the movies which was great.
